Desolation Island Uk
Published in Paperback by Fontana Books (01 January, 1978)
Average review score:

Best in the SeriesObrian's series is one of the most amazing historical novel series around. It is to be noted that some readers, expecting non stop action, are stumped by the depth and nuance. Some compare Obrian to Austen, I compare reading his books to savoring a hot drink on a cold night beside a crackling fire. This book is, in my opinion, the best in the series, though it is difficult to imagine reading it apart from the others. The stern chase scene is to me as the best single action sequence I have ever read, if not the best writing period.

Devil's Island
Published in Paperback by Canongate Pub Ltd (August, 2000)
Average review score:

Small people, big lifeA wonderful story of the struggle of the little man in an ever changeing world. The hardworking dreamer, the disillutioned daughter, the emotionally disturbed wife, the self-centered abusive son, they are all there. Could be written about the american south in the twenties, or the north of Ireland in the sixties, but is written about Iceland in the middle of world war II. Shows you that people are only human, wherever they are borne or live. A must read....
